Altar Wedge Tomb, County Cork
Ireland

Altar Wedge Tomb is situated overlooking Toormore bay on the Mizen Head peninsula. The megalithic structure dates from the late Stone Age, with evidence of cremated burials as far back as 2000 BC, and continued use as a sacred site for centuries after.

Its original ritual function ended with the arrival of Christianity, although it briefly served as a makeshift altar during the 18th century, at a time when priests were forbidden by law to hold mass in churches.
