Belmonte, Church of Santiago, Nartex
Portugal

The Santiago Chapel is a Romanesque monument that has undergone changes over time, with Gothic and Mannerist elements. The front of this church dates from the 18th century. Inside the church, you can see a chapel, built in 1240, by D. Maria Gil and a 14th century Pietá, which, according to José Saramago, is the most admirable piece of this church. On the opposite side, it is possible to observe frescoes, from at least two seasons. In the chancel there are traces of a triptych made up of figures representing Our Lady, S. Tiago (orago) and S. Pedro (which many say is a representation of Pedro Alvares Cabral).

In connection with this church is the Pantheon of Cabrais, which was still under construction in 1483, where it is possible to observe tombs of various elements of the Cabral family, including Pedro Alvares Cabral.

Situated on one of the Portuguese pilgrimage paths to Compostela, the "Via da Estrela", which is signposted in Belmonte, which would take advantage of the ancient Roman route that connected Mérida to Braga, the Church of Santiago would be a place where pilgrims would find comfort spirit in the course of your journey. In Largo do Castelo you can also see the chapels of Sto.António and Calvário.
