Castelo Branco, Historic Zone, 16th century portals, aerial view
Portugal

Castelo Branco has a Historic Zone full of beautiful 16th century Portals and an urban fabric that has hardly changed.

The study of the houses that bear these Quinhentistas Portals reveals that it is an architecture of scarce resources that, in many cases, makes use of a decoration that can informally be called "Poor Manueline" or "Popular Manueline".

Its repetitive character allows the current home to contribute to the definition of the city's image, occupying almost the entire urban space built in the Historic Zone. In addition, the current medieval house is an excellent testament to the needs and social and professional activities of the man of that time.

It is in the lintels of the shutters and windows that decorative details emerge with motifs in high and low relief, records of the time and indicators of the trade or economic relief and social status of the inhabitant.
