Cathédrale Sainte-Marie de Bayonne
Northern Spain

The Cathedral of Saint Mary, located in the heart of Bayonne, France, is Gothic in style, built on the site of a Romanesque cathedral destroyed by fire in 1258. Its construction was carried out in phases between the mid-13th and 16th centuries. Its towers were added in the 19th century through a large project led by Boeswillwad, a disciple of Viollet-le-Duc, who gave the cathedral the elegant appearance we know today. The chapels of the ambulatory are adorned with 14th-century paintings by Steinhel and stained glass in the style of Chartres.

The materials used were Mousserlles stone, an ochre stone, and Bidache stone, a white stone. Located in the heart of the historic center, it is a must-see for pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago.
