Cave church of Sta Maria de Valverde
Northern Spain

The cave church of Santa Maria de Valverde is on the road from Quintanilla de las Torres (Palencia) to Polientes capital of the municipality of Valderredible (Cantabria) to which it belongs.

Next to it has been recently opened the "Center of interpretation of the cave-churches" which visit is

highly recommended to learn the history and location of the numerous cave churches or chapels in the area
and the particularities of the hermit's life.

It has been declared of cultural interest in 1985.

The church was excavated in the sandstone in the ages of repopulation (VIII to X) and modified later.

The steeple of Romanesque type was added in the twelfth century to emphasize its presence and add monumentality.

In the outdoor rock next to the steeple is a anthropomorphic burial area, element characteristic of the hermitages of the High Middle Ages.

It is currently open for worship
