Coimbra, University, Sala dos Capelos
Portugal

From the Archers' Room you have access to an extensive corridor that has balconies that lead to the Sala Grande dos Actos, better known as “Sala dos Capelos”. It is here that the most important acts of academic life still take place, such as the inauguration of the Magnificent Rectors, the opening ceremony of the academic year and doctorates. This large space was originally the noble hall of Paço, remodeled in the second decade of the 15th century, by the master architect Marcos Pires. In the middle of the 17th century, it was definitively transformed by the builder António Tavares, responsible for many works at the University, namely the Porta Férrea. These renovations were carried out during the rectorate of D. Manuel de Saldanha. The painting of the ceiling, paneled, is the work of Jacinto Pereira da Costa and the large canvases with the Royal figures of various authors, those of those prior to D. Afonso VI by Carlos Falch. All these works of painting date from the years preceding 1655, and Manuel da Costa and André de Almeida also worked on them. . The tiles, of magnificent polychrome and carpet type, were manufactured in potteries in Lisbon. All around the room, on the highest plane, are the doctorates, great white runners, where only the Doctors have a seat during academic ceremonies. At the top opposite the entrance, in the middle, and also at the level of the seats, is the rector's chair, where the Rector presides over the acts. Guests and other entities take the place inside the web, at low level, leaving the rest of the room available to the public.
