View of the remains of the Wroxeter Roman City forum colonnade. The Roman city was known in Roman times as Viroconium Cornoviorum. Located near Wroxeter, England, the earliest establishment of the city dates back to 55AD as a frontier post. At its peak, Viroconium was estimated to have been the 4th largest Roman settlement in Britain w/ 15,000 citizens. The settlement probably last until the end of the 7th or 8th centuries. Much of the ruins are under roughly eight feet of soil w/ only this section publicly excavated & open for exploration. Excavations are ongoing but at a slow rate & nearby one can see the on-site museum & the nearby reconstructed Roman townhouse.
