南宁高新技术产业开发区创建于1988年，1992年经国务院批准为国家级高新区，总规划面积43.7平方公里。2001年底，南宁市委、市政府为加快园区经济发展，决定对开发区实行封闭式管理。几年来，园区发展迅速，初步形成了电子信息、生物工程与制药、机电一体化、新材料等优势产业，是广西众多个开发区中产业聚集程度最高、配套最成熟的园区，同时也是广西发展高新技术的重要基地。
