桂林叠彩山,位于桂林市中心偏北部的漓江西岸，与城中的独秀峰，漓江畔的伏波山鼎足而立。山体总占地10.8万平方米，由于越山、四望山、明月峰与仙鹤峰4峰组成。最高的仙鹤峰海拔253．6米，由3．6亿年前沉积的石灰岩和白云质灰岩组成。山上岩层呈厚层、中厚层及薄层状，远望岩层相叠，唐代元晦《叠彩山记》记载：“山以石纹横布，彩翠相间，若叠彩然，故以为名。”又因山上桂树成林，金秋时节香溢满城，又名“桂山”；此外，明月峰山腰有一个四季生风的洞，因而又得名“风洞山”。
