Guimaraes, Ducal palace, aerial view
Portugal

Ducal palace built by the founder of the house of Bragança, one of the richest men in Portugal, more worship and more traveled, the D.Fonso (1377-1461) Count of Barcelos, shortly after becoming Lord of the village of Guimarães. It was concluded by his son, Duke D.Fernando I. It is a reconstruction of the twentieth century by Arqº Rogério de Azevedo, which completely modified the original palace. The provision of the main entrance with the chapel, on axis, establishes a pattern that was being used in the Paço dos Mallorca kings in Perpignan (1262-1330). It seems, the original 15th century palace would be more modest than what we currently see. His author is unknown and could have been partially constructed by a master of French Anton origin, with residence in Guimarães. Duke D.Fonso born in 1377 at the Castle of Veiros in Alentejo, Bastard Son of D.John I, married at 1401 with D.Beatriz Pereira, the only daughter of the Saint Contestable, D. Nuno Álvares Pereira. The palace of the dukes will have been built after the death of D.Beatriz in Chaves 1414. D.Fonso married D.Constance of Noronha, granddaughter of Henry II of Castile.
