Hirschenstein - Ausblick vom Aussichtsturm

The 1095 meter high Hirschenstein, which is also the "local mountain" of the holiday region of the same name, is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful vantage points in the Upper Bavarian Forest.

The lookout tower in its current form was built a hundred years ago on the Hirschensprung, a steep rock slab in the south of the hilltop, and was inaugurated on August 14, 1921.
A stone tower with several heights was built here as early as 1870, as the Hirschenstein was a popular hiking destination as early as the 19th century. But around 30 years later, the original structure had to be closed because of dilapidation and collapsed completely in 1919. The remains of this old lookout point, which are a good 100 meters back from today's Hirschenstein Tum, can still be clearly seen today.

In May 1921, the new building was started - financed by donations - according to plans by the Munich architect Vollmann by master mason Karl from Ruhmannsfelden. 50 years later, the Bernried section of the Bavarian Forest Association took over the maintenance of the tower. Time and again, the association was able to cope with the repairs that had to be made in the following years with an enormous amount of work thanks to various grants and donations.
And so we still enjoy the panoramic view from the observation tower on the Hirschenstein: In the east and northeast, the view extends from Vogelsang over the Gotteszeller valley, Ruhmannsfelden and Achslach to the hill Arber. In the south, the view glides across the Bernried valley to the Danube river, the Metten monastery church appears somewhat hidden behind the hills and in the south-west, the view glides from the Bogenberg over the Gäuboden.

More About Bavaria

The “Free State of Bavaria” is renowned for being culturally unique and for the emphasis which it places on preserving its heritage and traditions. It is also extraordinarily beautiful, boasting a plethora of castles, palaces, cathedrals, abbeys and monasteries not to mention spectacular scenery. Bavaria is more than Alps, men in “lederhosen” (leather pants), women in “dirndl” (traditional dresses) and frothy glasses of beer by the “maβ” (liter).
