Ķūķi Cliffs on Gauja River, Latvia
Latvia

Ķūķi Cliffs are the highest Devonian rock outcrop in Latvia - 43m. The upper part - above the sandstones - is formed by clay layers containing many fossilized remains of organisms. Ķūķi Cliffs are rapidly changing their appearance due to river erosion and numerous landslides. In a few years, the shore has receded by as much as 10m!

The cliffs got their name from the nearby Ķūķi houses. Ķūķi porridge or Ķūķis was a traditional Latvian dish during the winter solstice. There are multi-tiered rapids next to the cliffs, and because of them, rafters in ancient times called the majestic cliffs the Rapid Rocks.
