Два с лишним года Древний город Смоленск находился в оккупации. В фашистских застенках, в лагерях смерти погибло более 135 тысяч человек, о чём свидетельствует бесчисленное множество братских могил. В парке Реадовка находится сооружённый смолянами в память о погибших на смоленской земле Курган Бессмертия, открытый 25 сентября 1970 года (автор Д.П. Коваленко, панно выполнено скульптором В.Я. Меньшовым). Перед Курганом горит Вечный Огонь. В этом же парке, где захоронено более трёх тысяч патриотов, стоит памятник «Скорбящая мать» (скульптор А.Г. Сергеев, художник С.С. Новиков, архитекторы А.Г. Стемпаржитский, Г.Г. Соосар).
