Erigée sur le rocher des Mans, à 1800 mètres d’altitude, elle a été construite durant l’été 1956 par les alpagistes, sous la houlette de l’abbé BAUD, curé de la paroisse. Plus d’une’ vingtaine d’hommes furent nécessaires pour hisser les trois morceaux de la statue jusqu’à son piédestal, d’abord par treuil puis avec l’aide de deux juments. Une tâche particulièrement délicate puisque le plus gros morceau ne pesait pas moins de 500 kg. Sculptée par M. Edgar DELVAUX de Leugny dans l’Yonne, ce même artiste qui a réalisé les statues de N.D. de l’Iseran et N.D. de la Neige, elle fut bénie le 15 août 1956. Hélas, durant l’hiver 1962-63, elle fut endommagée par l’avalanche qui, dans sa course, entraîna la partie supérieure de l’édifice jusqu’au bas de la falaise. Grâce au concours du commandant de la base du Bourget le morceau manquant a pu être replacé au moyen d’un hélicoptère. La garde de pierres, construite durant l’été 1963, a été renforcée récemment par une équipe de bénévoles. La Vierge est aujourd’hui bien à l’abri des avalanches et peut jouer son rôle de protectrice des alpagistes et de leurs troupeaux, mais aussi du village tout entier.
