Langkawi Legend Park
Malaysia
Opened in April 1996, Taman Lagenda was the brainchild of former Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, designed to serve as a living archive for the oral traditions that gave Langkawi its title as the "Island of Legends". The park brings to life stories that have been passed down for generations, such as the Battle of the Giants, where two friends, Mat Cincang and Mat Raya, fought so fiercely that their bodies were transformed into the island's two highest mountains. Other sculptures tell the somber tale of Mahsuri, the innocent maiden whose curse allegedly stunted the island's growth for seven generations, and the legend of the Garuda, a mythical bird that once clashed with a Chinese princess's wedding fleet. By reclaiming part of the waterfront, the park stands as a symbolic bridge between Langkawi's ancient folklore and its modern identity as a UNESCO Global Geopark.
