Leiria, Industrial architecture 16th century, Paper mill, Artisanal manufacturing room
Portugal

Industrial, 16th century architecture. Paper mill built next to the watercourse, with wells where horizontal and parallel wheels rotate. In 1411, D. João I granted a royal license to Gonçalo Lourenço de Gomide to make paper in Leiria, having started to operate in this place what has been considered the first paper mill in Portugal.

Paper production in the medieval village may be related to the installation of one of the first printing shops in the country, belonging to the family of the Jewish printer Samuel de Ortas.

After the intervention of the architect Siza Vieira, the building complex has been operating since 2009 as a museum space. Artisanal manufacturing room
