The Lone Pine site on the east end of The Dalles is an important historic site. Originally it was a major indian fishing site harvesting the rich salmon runs of the Columbia River. It then became the downstream end of the long, arduous portage around 7 mile rapids, including Celilo Falls, for all Oregon trail pioneers. While continuing as an indian net fishing site to this day, it became in the early 1900's the site of an indian charismatic "shaker" religion and church led by Sam Williams, a Cowlitz indian. For over 100 years the remnant spartan wood structures have withstood the blistering extremes of desert weather, floods, and scouring winds although the "church collapsed a decade ago under a snow load. The remaining structures, recognized in the national historic register but not as a "historic site" have neither been vandalized nor maintained, will eventually be fully combusted by the desert sun.
