Established in 1801 on Penang Street before moving to its current site on Love Lane, Loo Pun Hong was founded by Cantonese migrants of the Sinling sub-dialect group from Guangdong province. It served as a vital support hub where skilled craftsmen provided shelter and training to new arrivals, helping them settle in the growing British colony.
The current temple building was constructed between 1855 and 1886 entirely through the manual labor of the guild members themselves. It is dedicated to Lo Pan (Lu Ban), a legendary master architect and inventor from China's Zhou Dynasty who is revered as the patron deity of carpenters and builders. Today, the site remains an active place of worship and a symbol of the immense contributions made by early Chinese tradesmen to Penang's urban landscape.
