في بداية القرن الرابع عشر الهجري الموافق للقرن العشرين الميلادي أمر السلطان عبد الحميد الثاني بإنشاء سكة حديد على أن تربط إسطنبول بالمدينة المنورة مروراً ببلاد الشام

حيث كانت مدائن صالح إحدى محطاته الرئيسية، وقد احتوت المحطة على ستة عشر مبنى منها ورشة إصلاح القاطرات، وورشة إصلاح المحرّكات
