Medvednica is a mountain in central Croatia. The bottom parts of southern mountain slopes are practically the northern edge of the city of Zagreb. The highest peak, at 1033 m, is Sljeme. Name Sljeme is often used to refer the entire mountain. In a local dialect term 'medved' means bear (standard Croatian would be 'medvjed') so accordingly, the name Medvednica can be translated as a 'bear mountain'. Most of Medvednica is a declared as a 'nature park' that extends over an area of 228.26 square kilometers.
