National Palace of Queluz, north aerial view
Lisbon
The National Palace of Queluz is an 18th century palace located in the city of Queluz in the municipality of Sintra, district of Lisbon. One of the last large Rococo buildings erected in Europe, the palace was built as a summer retreat for D. Pedro de Bragança, who would later become the husband and king consort of his niece, Queen D. Maria I of Portugal . The aesthetic party is oblivious to the rational classicism of the Enlightenment represented by Pombal, especially after the action following the 1755 earthquake. The turning point of the palace's preferential destiny occurs when the marriage of D. Pedro III with D. Maria I, the the palace is now obliged to assume the functions of the State and has to adapt for the purpose, taking into account the court ceremony and the stay of the royal family. Some of the rooms adopt the current designation after the functional transformation, including the Ambassadors Room (formerly the Great Room) and the Throne Room (formerly the Oval Room) transformed in 1768-1770.
