The community was founded in 1510 (18 years after Columbus) by Diego de Nicuesa & is the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the Americas. It was an important shipping port b/w 1540 to 1580 w/ a mule trail connecting to Panamá City on the Pacific Coast leading to the silver mines in Potosí in present-day Bolivia. While the original settlement doesn't exist today, Nombre de Dios today is relatively sleepy w/ a population of 1,130 citizens as of 2010.
