兴城古城始建于明宣德三年，为宁远卫城，清代重修，改称宁远州城。兴城古城，是五百年前留下来的一份珍贵的历史遗产，是我国目前保存最完整的一座明代古城，是国家级文物保护单位。 兴城古城内四街十字相交，正中有古楼一座，登楼鸟瞰全城，古朴典雅的明代一条街、乾隆帝赋诗评价过的祖氏石坊尽收眼底。城设四门，东为春和门、南为延辉门，西为永宁门，北为威远门，门上皆筑门楼，四角各设角台，东南角台上有魁星楼一座。其中，西门是《平原游击队》、《三进山城》、《吉鸿昌》等多部电影、电视剧的拍摄地点，值得一看。
