Porto, Parish of Nevogilde, aerial view
Portugal

Founded in 1258, the parish of Nevogilde (Lavygildus) belonged to the old Judge of Bouças (Matosinhos), according to inquiries ordered by D. Afonso III. Only at the end of the 19th century did this parish begin to integrate the city and municipality of Porto, through the construction of the Estrada da Circunvalação on 21 November 1895.

Nevogilde grew up between two small population niches: around the church and around a small port, that of Carreiros, which played a major role in the economic and social life of the parish and its surrounding area. This also served as a place for unloading goods and a landing point for many liberal soldiers during the Siege of Porto. Nevogilde is the land of the beach, of bathing, a place that the bourgeoisie has become accustomed to. This movement brought new business and modernity to the parish and it was thanks to the fashion of the baths that a community took root that, over the years, developed the area socially and economically, the British.
