A 31m aerial view overlooking Portobelo harbor in Portobelo, Panama. Here the waters are adorned w/ numerous sunked boats. Portobelo, "Puerto Bello" or "Beautiful Port", was founded in 1597 & has a population of 4,559 as of 2010. Having a deep harbor, the area was used by the Spaniards for transport of mined treasures from Peru over the Isthmus & to this port back to Spain. On November 21, 1739, the port was captured by the British during the War of Jenkins' Ear & then recaptured by the Spanish two years later. In view are the Portobelo-San Lorenzo fort ruins, a UNESCO world heritage site that was built in the 17th/18th centuries. Behind that is the Iglesia de San Felipe, a church built in 1814 that houses a statue of Cristo Negro "Black Jesus", which was found on the shores of the harbor.
