Vila do Conde, Portuguese ship, 16th century, cargo hold, Portugal
The sailors provided the services inherent to the ship's navigation and maneuvering. Two of the sailors were in charge of looking after and repairing string and candles - they were the triplets. The cabin boys, almost always young teenagers, were left to comply with what was expected of those who occupied the lowest place in the hierarchy: the heavy work, accompanied by the mistreatment to which they were frequently subjected and suffering the worst living conditions on board. Of the same age group were the pages, but with a completely different treatment and function, close to those of bellboys.
