Rock Spring along the Old Majave Road

The water occurs at the lower eastern end of Rock Canyon and rises at several places through the cracks in the rocks and builds into a small stream the runs only a short distance into the sand. At times in the past, there has been enought water to create swimming holes for homesteader children.

In late 1866 an Army post was established at this spot and called Camp Rock Spring, California. It was maintained through 1867 and into 1868 at which time the U.S. Mail was taken off the Mojave Road and the presence of the Army no longer required.
