Lake Sammamish - Ted Bundy kidnappings

Lake Sammamish State Park is a popular recreation area outside of Issaquah, Washington.  This view is the field near Sunset Beach where a lot of social gatherings take place.  Such was the case on July 14, 1974 as Rainier Beer was holding an annual picnic in the park event.  Notorious serial killer Ted Bundy had arrived here in his 1968 Volkswagen Beetle where he parked approximately where the blue arrow is marked.  A number of female witnesses described seeing the attractive young man in a white tennis outfit with his left arm in a sling with a slight accent.  He introduced himself as "Ted" & asked for help to unload a sailboat from his bronze-colored Volkswagen Beetle.  Four of them refused while one accompanied him as far as the car, then upon seeing no sailboat she fled.  He then approached Janice Anne Ott at about where the yellow arrow is marked, age 23, to which three witnesses saw her leave the beach in his company.  About four hours later he returned to Lake Sammamish where he encountered 19 year old Denise Marie Naslund (red arrow), to which she then left a picnic to go to the restroom, but never returned.  Despite how crowded it was, nobody had witnessed the actual kidnappings of both women.  My arrows are indicated from a single aerial image (https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DiHeS5AU8AAQdhr?format=jpg&name=small).

It wasn't until September 6, 1974 that the skeletal remains of both girls were found about two miles away near a service road in Issaquah (https://www.360cities.net/image/issaquah).  Additional bones were also found identified as Georgann Hawkins.  Ted Bundy (1946-1989) remains one of the most infamous American serial killers, known for committing 30+ homicides of young women & girls particularly between 1974 to 1978.  His crimes spanned a number of states, but his first murders took place around the Seattle area in 1974 if not earlier.  He had also abducted many other women in the Seattle area to which their remains were found at nearby Taylor Mountain (see my panorama: https://www.360cities.net/image/taylormountain). His first arrest was in Utah in 1975 for kidnapping & attempted criminal assault.  This ultimately led to the discovery of his criminal past here in Washington state & while despite being behind bars, he managed to escape twice & committed three additional murders in Florida until his final capture in 1978.  He was ultimately executed on January 24, 1989 at Florida State Prison.

More About USA

The United States is one of the most diverse countries on earth, jam packed full of amazing sights from St. Patrick's cathedral in New York to Mount Hollywood California. The Northeast region is where it all started. Thirteen British colonies fought the American Revolution from here and won their independence in the first successful colonial rebellion in history. Take a look at these rolling hills carpeted with foliage along the Hudson river here, north of New York City. The American south is known for its polite people and slow pace of life. Probably they move slowly because it's so hot. Southerners tend not to trust people from "up north" because they talk too fast. Here's a cemetery in Georgia where you can find graves of soldiers from the Civil War.The West Coast is sort of like another country that exists to make the east coast jealous. California is full of nothing but grizzly old miners digging for gold, a few gangster rappers, and then actors. That is to say, the West Coast functions as the imagination of the US, like a weird little brother who teases everybody then gets famous for making freaky art.The central part of the country is flat farmland all the way over to the Rocky Mountains. Up in the northwest corner you can find creative people in places like Portland and Seattle, along with awesome snowboarding and good beer. Text by Steve Smith.
