It was built between the late eighteenth century and the third quarter of the nineteenth century. The church was completed in 1875.
Facing the church is the stairway of virtues, with statues representing Faith, Hope, Charity and the Glory, dated 1854, work of the master Francisco Luis Barreiros.
After a triangular square where are the old dormitories for pilgrims (now transformed into a hotel), the sanctuary is developed on a wooded lane staircase with 300 meters and 20 chapels with scenes from the life of Christ (Nativity and Passion ). One of the chapels bears an inscription attesting to its being offered by the Negus of Ethiopia. At the mall background, a circular square, stands a pillar offered by Queen Maria I of Portugal.
In the first week of September is held in the sanctuary a great popular camp.
