Stavros beach from the air
Chania

From this elevated viewpoint the twin crescent-shaped bays of Stavros reveal their full beauty – shallow turquoise waters gently lap a sandy shore, with a dramatic rocky ridge rising behind the village. This beach is perhaps best known for being the filming location of the iconic dance scene in the 1964 film Zorba the Greek, starring Anthony Quinn, which immortalised the spot in cinematic history. The western arm of the bay remains quieter and less developed, offering a contrast to the more popular eastern side that curves out like a natural lagoon. Interestingly, the beach sits on the rugged peninsula of Akrotiri, whose limestone once formed part of the Venetian fortifications of Chania centuries ago. Today Stavros is easily accessible from Chania yet retains a beautifully unspoiled feel — especially when seen from above.
