Nadarivatu Road - abandoned sugar cane rail line
Fiji

A view of Nadarivatu Road south of Tavua, Fiji.  The northwest half of Viti Levu island is drier in climate allowing for vast production fields of sugar cane.  Here one can see a remnant of a sugar cane rail line, built primarily by the Colonial Sugar Refinery (CSR) starting in the late 1800s, to haul harvested cane to mills on Viti Levu and Vanua Levu; though once spanning over 700km, the system significantly declined by the 21st century with many lines abandoned for road transport.
