Tarouca, Ucanha bridge deck
Portugal

The bridge in its primitive one-story tower structure worked with the barrier or toll tax. Documents from 1315 and 1318 determine the mandatory crossing of the bridge and the respective payment, a practice that only came to be abolished during the reign of King Manuel I, in 1504.

There is no doubt about the importance of this route since ancient times. Because of it, there was a long and heated question between 1310 and 1320, in which the former municipality of Castro Rei - Tarouca - intervened, which always wished and temporarily passed through the village, having as opponents the monastery of Salzedas that defended the mandatory nature of passing through the bridge and tower of Cucanha over the Varosa River.
