The Chapeau Nègre trail climbs Morne Chapeau Nègre (911 m), just below Piton Lacroix, starting from the Morne Covin car park in Martinique. Covering 3.7 km round trip with 430 m of elevation gain, it's a wild, poorly maintained path where a machete is often needed to clear the way. Markings (cairns, paint marks) are scarce and faded, along an exposed ridge dropping on both sides. The reward is stunning views of Mount Pelée, the Pitons du Carbet, and Fort-de-France Bay. This hike is only for experienced, well-equipped walkers.
