Erzurum Ulu Camii, 1179 yılında Saltukoğullarından Melik Nasirüddin Muhammed Bey (1174-1185) zamanında yapılmıştır. Kendisinin, Irak Selçukluları Sultanı Üçüncü Tuğrul ve asıl iktidarı elinde tutan Atabeg Kızıl Arslan’a tâbi olduğu 1189 senesinde basılan bir sikkeden anlaşılmaktadır.[1] Melik Nasirüddin Muhammed Bey döneminde yapılan Erzurum Ulu Caminin "Atabeg Camii" ya da "Atabey Camii" diye adlandırılmasının sebebi, Sultan Atabeg Kızıl Arslan'a duyulan bağlılık ve hürmetten dolayıdır.(Kaynak Wikipedia)
