Umpire Rock - Centralpark Sunset
Central Park

The Umpire Rock is a prominent geological feature located in Central Park, New York City. It is situated on the east side of the park, near the southern end of the Harlem Meer, which is a large body of water within the park. Umpire Rock is a large outcropping of exposed bedrock, typical of the Manhattan schist that forms much of the park's underlying geology.

The rock itself has a rugged appearance, with various crevices, fissures, and uneven surfaces. It offers a vantage point that overlooks the Harlem Meer and provides visitors with a picturesque view of the water, surrounding landscape, and the city skyline beyond.

Umpire Rock's name is believed to originate from its history as a location where baseball games were played in the early days of Central Park, sometimes referred to as "baseball's first diamond." Umpires would stand on this rock to oversee the games, hence the name "Umpire Rock."
