Viana do Castelo, Areosa, Windmills
Portugal

Windmills were very frequent on the coast, where the intensity of offshore winds provided an excellent driving force for milling cereals. The sails could be positioned to better capture the energy of the wind, rotating the roof itself together with the canopy. This rotation movement was carried out by means of a kind of wooden handle, which descended externally to the height of a person. The candles, usually four, were triangular cloth candles, mounted on cloth sticks and sheet sticks. In this strip of coast, between the Lima and Minho rivers, large trapezoidal sails of boards were also used, mounted on large fixed slats and four arms.
