Viana do Castelo, Cathedral, Chapel of Saint Bernard
Portugal

Dedicated to the Nª Srª da Soledade instituted in 1546 by Commander Fernão Brandão and his wife, C. Fagundes. It is accessed by a perfect round arch with rounded edges and volute closing stone, bearing the date of 1547, flanked by two fluted pilasters, the one on the left with a capital decorated by a bird and the one on the right, with a stylized shell, revealing later work; on the cornice, a frieze has the inscription: "THIS C (nickname) A MA (n DOV MAKE FERNÃ BR / ANDÃ AND SVA WOMAN C (atarin) FAGV (n) TEN" and, in the center, a stone of arms. Interior with descending access through three steps, revealing, certainly, the primitive dimension of the church, it has a granite flagstone floor, plastered walls and a vaulted roof with ribs decorated by anthropomorphic figures. On the sides it has arches with tombs bearing inscriptions, Gospel with a hollow bottom communicating with the Chapel of the Most Holy.
