The quarrying of limestone here began in 1938, and continued through the Soviet era until the 1990's, a huge spoil heap being created at the western end. The hard labour was supplied by Rummu and Murru prisons, both nearby, Rummu being the closest. Due to pump failure, and over a single weekend, the quarry filled with water, and since Rummu prison's closure in 2013 has become a popular dive site.
