Viseu, Cathedral, Cloister, first level
Portugal

D.Miguel Silva in 1528 commissioned this cloister from Francisco de Cremona, replacing the old cloister of the century. XIV by João de Lamego. The upper floor is an addition to the century. XVIII

Composed of two galleries, the lower one is from the Renaissance period and the upper one was added in the first half of the century. XVIII. The Renaissance gallery is very elegant and of beautiful proportions, worthy of note is the delicate work of the capitals and finely fluted shafts, the artist's surprising mastery over the hardness of granite stone. Before the century. XVI this place was occupied by the royal palaces, which were then demolished to build the cloister there. The tiles were placed in the century. XVIII and represent scenes from the life of S. Teotónio, patron of Viseu. In the north wing of the cloister, a Roman-Gothic door was discovered in 1918, following work on the walls, which connects it to the central body of the interior of the church and which is the most interesting testimony of the primitive temple. In the east wing of the cloister are the chapels of Calvário and Tércia, both from the Renaissance.
