Dead Indian Memorial Road - Jackman/Isser murders
USA

WARNING!: Description below may be disturbing to some readers.

This view shows Dead Indian Memorial Road by the county stockpile outside of Ashland, Oregon.  At 2pm on December 27, 1979, two 11 year-old sixth-grade girls named Deanna Jackman & her friend Rachel Isser arrived & had planned to play tennis at Hunter Park in Ashland.  When both girls failed to return home, the girls' families began a search trying to retrace their steps.  By nightfall, Deanne's father Andrew searched the Southern Oregon University stadium where at the press box he found tennis rackets & balls & ultimately the body of Rachel Issar.  She had been strangled & sexually assaulted w/ torture wounds.  Deanne Jackson was found the next day along Dead Indian Memorial Road across the way from the Frog Creek county stockpile by the scrub oak savanna, succombing to a similar fate.

A number of witnesses reported a man in the area, even one seeing him on the college bleachers talking to himself, reported as a Hispanic male w/ a green sweater.  A few days later, police happened to save a man from suicide after he was planning to jump off a bridge onto traffic on Interstate 5.  After being caught, he confessed to the murders but couldn't be linked.

Not long after, a paper sack found at a car wash contained a quilt that had blood & dirt on it.  Test analysis confirmed it to be Deanna's.  After sending photos of the quilt to local newspapers, a man had called claiming it was his & that he had allowed a 24-year-old man named Manuel Cortez to live in his apartment on Idaho Street in Ashland.  Shortly afterwards they had an arrest warrant however Cortez had fled some time ago.  He was also linked to a past crime in 1977 involving a girl from Pomona, California.  He was finally arrested on January 5, 1980.  Prosecutors described Cortez as a sexual sadist & predator & after a mistrial he was eventually sentenced to life in prison.

More About USA

The United States is one of the most diverse countries on earth, jam packed full of amazing sights from St. Patrick's cathedral in New York to Mount Hollywood California. The Northeast region is where it all started. Thirteen British colonies fought the American Revolution from here and won their independence in the first successful colonial rebellion in history. Take a look at these rolling hills carpeted with foliage along the Hudson river here, north of New York City. The American south is known for its polite people and slow pace of life. Probably they move slowly because it's so hot. Southerners tend not to trust people from "up north" because they talk too fast. Here's a cemetery in Georgia where you can find graves of soldiers from the Civil War.The West Coast is sort of like another country that exists to make the east coast jealous. California is full of nothing but grizzly old miners digging for gold, a few gangster rappers, and then actors. That is to say, the West Coast functions as the imagination of the US, like a weird little brother who teases everybody then gets famous for making freaky art.The central part of the country is flat farmland all the way over to the Rocky Mountains. Up in the northwest corner you can find creative people in places like Portland and Seattle, along with awesome snowboarding and good beer. Text by Steve Smith.
