Kazan Cathedral
Yaroslavl

In Kazan monastery first stone church was Kazan Cathedral , built in 1649. In 1845 it was replaced by a new, much more grandiose cathedral has been preserved to our days.


Current Kazan Cathedral was built by architect A. Melnikov, in the style of late Classicism. A large, massive building topped by five major chapters on light drums.

The cathedral has a tall elegant bell tower (1828), one of the highest in Yaroslavl, demolished in Soviet times.

After the events of the White revolt in 1918 monastery was abolished, all property seized, the nuns sent to Tolgsky monastery, where he stayed until its closure.


From 1919 - to 1922 in the territory of the monastery was a concentration camp.

Since 1998, the Kazan Cathedral re-opened a convent and determined prioress of the monastery nun Tolga Holy Vedenskiy nunnery - Michael. For 4 years the monastery passed: Kazan Cathedral, house Sretenskaya Church, part of the cell quarters.
