Etna phone booth night scene
California

This phone booth is a local iconic landmark of Etna, California.  Payphones used to be commonplace all over the country - now it is estimated that only 100,000 payphones are left in the United States as of 2018 (not including call boxes).  I personally remember seeing payphones at the entrance to a fast food restaurant & often feeding my finger in the coin dispenser to see if someone forgot their change.  Sometimes I got lucky!

Here in rural western Siskiyou County it is actually common to see them alongside the roads or in isolated communities where cellphone reception is lacking.  They can be lifelines in this region where cell phone towers remain oblique.
