Braga, Funerary Chapel of Sao Frutuoso, pre-romanesque
Portugal

A funerary chapel of Visigothic origin, a rare pre-Romanic monument in Portugal. Follows the model of Gala Placidia of Ravenna. Around 656 São Frutuoso, Bishop of Bracara, founded the Monastery of São Salvador in this place, ordering the construction of the chapel for its tomb. When he died in 665 he is buried here. In the Church of S.Francisco, the relics of S.Frutuoso are preserved, taken to Santiago de Compostela in 1102 during the incursion of the Archbishop of Compostela D.Guelmirez and returned only in 1966. In 1523 the Archbishop of Braga, D.Diogo de Sousa founds the Franciscan Convent of Capuchos da Piedade here, probably destroying the former Monastery of S. Salvador. In 1728, by order of Archbishop D. Rodrigo de Moura Teles, the reconstruction and remodeling of the church of the convent of São Francisco begins, with the Chapel of São Frutuoso integrated into the church and having main access through its interior; the main facade, the internal canopies and respective columns are destroyed, and the East and North arms are modified. The conventual premises are to the east of the chapel of S.Frutuoso and form a U.
