La Tabacalera Self Managed Social Center Madrid
Madrid

Self-managed social center La Tabacalera is a self-managed social center: a space where theater, music, dance, painting, conferences, meetings, audiovisual, workshops, events, interventions in the neighborhood ... We try to prevail over any other activity, and that the collective, public and social transformation is present in all of them. Transformer to call what is done from self-management and autonomy rather from dependency: IF WITH - Equity - Encouragement of cultural and social wealth creation - Horizontal and cooperation - Criticism and transparency - Direct - Review and experimentalism WITH NO - Borrowed funds and conditioning - Profit - Leadership and individualism - Complacency or concealment - Delegation - Conservatism We try to organize the use of space for all this to be possible, leave room for unforeseen developments and trying to get all participants cooperate in the definition and development of the project. The criteria we handle are common and valid social center as a whole and for each activity, group or field of activity: Horizontality: all areas of administration and activities should promote cooperation among equals, seeking democratic forms of participation, organization and decision. Transparency: decisions and practices should be communicated and be accessible to anyone, so they are collectively evaluated and reviewed. Gratuity: access to spaces and activities should be free, the money can not be a filter, a selection mechanism. All social center resources are commonly owned and public and free. Economic sustainability: some activities or projects need to generate their own financial resources to be sustainable. In certain cases, and always following the approval of the assembly, some activities are launched self-employment projects and establish different exchange systems, among which sometimes includes money as return mechanism. Responsibility, cooperation, commitment, proportionality: mutual support guide the management and maintenance of all areas and activities, and is the responsibility of everyone s daily management decisions affecting the social center and each of their spaces . The responsible attitude of acting with restraint (economic, energy and labor) and with awareness of the limitations that we impose. Respect: to people, to diversity, to collective decisions, modes of operation agreed to the spaces we inhabit. Autonomy: decisions, courses of action or the overall organizational and social center of each space are taken without outside interference or dependence on external agents on the basis of respect for the agreements and common criteria. Free Culture: what is produced and reproduced in LTBC should be subject to free licenses, be freely accessible and be aimed at broadening the public domain in the field of knowledge and culture. Versatility, flexibility, no exclusivity or appropriation of spaces: beyond the necessary adaptation of certain spaces for certain uses, they should be compatible, accessible to everyone and permeable to new proposals. The uses of the spaces are reviewable and evaluated by the assembly in the time periods established by it. The projects, collectives or groups using space undertake to submit an assessment within the time determined by the assembly. LTBC is an open public space: to no one and is everyone s. The responsibility of those involved in the management of the center is to establish mechanisms for the center to be truly open and renewed initiatives and people take ownership of the space, so that no person or project is in a place of power. LTBC is a living process, an attempt to collective learning: these criteria are trends we seek but do not always achieve to comply fully. Every day we try to rethink, settle them and include some new. LTBC is a space intransigent sexism, racism, discrimination, homophobia and lack of solidarity. We have a set of good practices that try to comply, it is the responsibility of each of us get it.
