正倉院 外構
Japan

正倉院の「正倉」とは、元来「正税を収める倉」という意味であり、官庁や大寺(「寺領」から税を取っている)に存在していた。大寺ではその倉を塀で囲った一帯を「正倉院」と称していた為、「正倉院」は南都七大寺にそれぞれ存在していたのだが時代とともに失われていき現在残っているのは東大寺の「正倉院」のみとなっている。明治以降、東大寺の正倉院は国の管理となり東大寺から分離、内務省の所管となる。その後農商務省のへの移管を経て1884年に宮内省の所管となる。現在は宮内庁の正倉院事務所によって管理されている。

いまから30年ほど前は、正倉院の外構(門の内側に入って離れた場所から正倉正面の外側のみ見る)は「正倉院展」の時期にしか見ることが出来なかった。その為、その時期以外に正倉院を見ることは原則としてできず、敷地を囲う柵の隙間から遠くに見える正倉の佇まいを眺めるよりほかはなかった。しかし、その後拝観の規制が大幅に緩和され、現在では平日であればいつでも外構の見学はいつでもできるようになった。

「正倉院」を含む東大寺の天平時代の遺構は戦乱で大方焼けてしまったため、「正倉院」正倉は転害門、法華堂(三月堂)と共に天平時代の東大寺の姿を伝える貴重な遺構となっている。
