Viseu, Cathedral, choir
Portugal

The original Viseu Cathedral is built in the 12th century in a Roman style. The current Cathedral that we see is a reconstruction of the 16th century, Manueline style, designed by João de Castilho, with a unified space, following the model "Church". The Gothic chancel and collateral chapels were rebuilt during the century. XVII, noting the classic and capital arches. A storm causes the fall of a tower and the Manueline façade, beginning the reconstruction of the pediment between 1635-48 under the mannerist design of Juan Moreno de Salamanca. It is a retable portal. The dome of both towers are added at the same time.

Over its 900 years, the cathedral (re) was built on itself, overcoming all the challenges imposed by history. Here we prayed and lived for centuries, heard a thousand murmurs and prayers, cries and laughter. A place of hope and comfort, it was the birthplace of the monarchy, unscathed in bloody wars, embraced the fleeing population. Built in the beginning of the 12th century, associated with the palace and the castle, the Cathedral of Viseu underwent extensive remodeling in the 13th-14th centuries, with the building of the Gothic cloister and the new body of the cathedral. The 15th and 16th centuries correspond to the largest construction cycle of the temple, with the construction of the vault of knots, a Manueline façade and the Renaissance cloister designed by Francesco da Cremona, the architect of D. Miguel da Silva.
