Viseu, Chapel of Senhora dos Remedios
Portugal

In the vicinity of Porta do Soar, in the former Terreiro da Erva, devotion to Nossa Senhora dos Remédios was the main orientation for the people of Viseense to build a small chapel with sui generis characteristics in the city's religious architecture, namely in its octagonal plan. Its construction from the first half of the 18th century, fell to the mason masons Manuel Ribeiro and Manuel Lourenço who, through the alms of the people, shaped the temple, as the inscription on the main door lintel reminds us. Its interior is decorated with tile panels and gilded altarpieces that reflect the religiosity of the people of Viseu.

Religious, Baroque architecture. Built with the support of devotees' alms. Centralized chapel, octagonal of a nave covered by a hemispherical dome and chancel with vaulted cradle. Sacristy in a differentiated body, attached laterally. Main façade with straight lintel portal, topped by a window. On the immediate faces, two windows. The octagon is defined by rammed corners and topped by a frieze and cornice. Perfect symmetry inside. Late-Baroque altarpiece of polychrome carving, imitating marble. Ashlar of blue and white tiles with hagiographic theme. The image of the Virgin with a childlike face is from the 15th century, carved in limestone.
