Monastery San Salvador de Leire Leyre Navarra
Northern Spain
The monastery of Leyre hides magnificent treasures such as the crypt of the eleventh century, the Gothic vault or the "Porta Speciosa", a perfect Romanesque portico of the twelfth century. An atmosphere of peace and serenity that invites the rest of the spirit, reflection and inner peace; an austere architecture, which crystallizes in the walls an important part of history, culture, art and thought; an amazing nature that invites to walk and meditation; overwhelming Gregorian chants; and the conversation with the Benedictine monks are some of the attractions that will remain in his memory after visiting the monastery of San Salvador de Leyre. One of the most attractive and endearing monumental complexes in Navarra. And tomb of Navarre kings. Its origins date back to the end of the Middle Ages, but it was burned down by Muslims in the 10th century and King Sancho García commissioned its reconstruction in 1020. The remains are stored in an ivory coffin that is exhibited in the Museum of Navarra. Overwhelming crypt of the 11th century, the oldest part of all preserved. His austerity contrasts with the decoration of the covers of the abbey church, especially with that of the Speciosa door, another of the great treasures of the monastery. It dates from the 12th century and is adorned with elements of the Jacobean route. adorned with elements of the Jacobean route.
