Santiago Road, Eunate Monastery, Religious
Northern Spain
One of the most beautiful and suggestive churches of the Camino de Santiago, that of Our Lady of Eunate, simple, original and mysterious. Enigmatic geometry and an interior that will overwhelm you and try to guess the meaning of its name, "one hundred doors", in Basque. On the Toulouse route of the Camino de Santiago. Imposing the church of Santa María de Eunate, a rare, beautiful and suggestive example of Romanesque architecture declared a national monument. Built in 1170, its origin is not clear. Some historians have considered the possibility that it was the work of the Templars. The set of octagonal plan, such as the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem and two other constructions of the Camino de Santiago, is surrounded by a beautiful arcaded gallery of 33 arches, with decorated capitals. The harmony of the octagonal plan is broken by the pentagonal apse and a square-shaped turret on the side of the epistle. Openwork and blind windows and two access doors alternate on the exterior walls, the north one facing the Camino, very decorated, and a simpler one towards the west.
