Snow Canyon State Park (HDR)
Utah

Some of the spectacular fossilized sand dunes (sandstone) that can be seen at Snow Canyon State Park near St.George, Utah.   this Navajo Sandstone formation can also be seen at Zion, Bryce Canyon, Grand Canyon and Arches National Parks in the Colorado Plateau between Utah, Arizona and Colorado.

The formation was formed as long ago as the late Triassic period (~200 million years ago), by cross-bedded sand deposits that were once part of an ancient eolian landscape (a great sea of ancient sand dunes). The dunes were buried and eventually became cemented into these deep red iron-containing sandstone deposits we can see and enjoy today.
